Designed around the room it would inhabit, down to the two inches that made all the difference.

THE ROOM CAME FIRST
The Draper Table did not begin with a standard furniture dimension. It began with the room itself.

The entire living and dining space was modeled in SketchUp, including the footprint of a future dining nook, to understand how the table would live within it. A conventional 72-inch length was close. Seventy inches was right. Those two inches preserved the proportions and movement of the room, allowing the table to feel as though it belonged there rather than simply fitting inside it.
The Design
Substance without Heaviness
The table needed enough presence to anchor the room without feeling heavy within it.

That balance shaped every line. The perimeter of the top was sculpted to create a thinner visual edge, while softly rounded corners, a curved apron, and splayed, tapered legs carried that lighter profile throughout the piece. Each transition was refined so the table would feel substantial from across the room and considered as you moved closer.
The Material
Material Matters
American black walnut was chosen for its depth, warmth, and expressive grain. Each board was considered not only on its own, but for how it would work beside the next, allowing the surface to read as one composition.

At 1¼ inches thick, the solid walnut top has real substance. A sculpted undercut visually thins the perimeter, allowing that mass to read with a lighter, more refined profile.
The Making
Built one piece at a time
The Draper Table was built as a collection of individual parts, each shaped in response to the next. Joinery established the structure, while the apron, legs, and tabletop were gradually refined until their transitions felt continuous rather than assembled.

The work moved through repeated stages of shaping, fitting, sanding, and refinement. Much of what gives the finished table its character is found in those small adjustments, the ones that quietly disappear into the final form.

Finished and placed in the room that shaped it, The Draper Table brings together proportion, material, and form. What began with the space is resolved in a piece made specifically for it.
